Comprehensive Periodontal Exam

A comprehensive periodontal exam will be performed by your periodontist at your initial visit.  The purpose of the appointment will be for us to understand the concerns and desires you have regarding your periodontal health.  It forms the foundation for the relationship we have with you.  This visit includes the following:

  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of periodontal bone loss, decay between the teeth, and bite problems.  X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions, and the root anatomy.
  • Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum disease and periodontal disease evaluation: Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
  • Evaluation of gum recession: Gum recession indicates the presence of periodontal disease activity under the gums.
  • Tooth mobility:  Detecting early signs of bite problems allows your periodontist to recommend non-surgical solutions that can prevent damage to the bone around the teeth from occurring in the future.
  • Examination of tooth decay and fracture: Tooth surfaces will be checked for decay and fractures with special dental instruments.  Teeth that have decay may benefit from a new restoration.  That will be noted, and the information will be given to your referring dentist.
  • Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, implants, etc.  Teeth that have failing restorations may benefit from a new restoration.  This information will be noted, and that information will be given to your referring dentist.
  • Examination of personal oral hygiene techniques:  The methods a person uses at home to clean the teeth and gums can have a profound effect on the health (or disease) present in his/her mouth.  For patients that need it, the training in brushing and flossing we provide can help a patient obtain better oral health over time.
  • Detailed discussion with your periodontist:  We allow enough time during our examinations for you to get answers to your questions.

Periodic Periodontal Exam

The periodic periodontal examination gives your periodontist the ability to closely monitor the progress of your periodontal health over a long period of time.  We can instruct patients on minor changes to home care habits that can have a big impact on their health.  An area that worsens may require closer attention.  Other areas may require less attention, allowing our team to help you focus your home care efforts on teeth that need it.  Frequent, periodic evaluations give our staff the ability to provide better advice to you.
